1. Suppose that n is the product of three consecutive integers and that n is divisible by 7.  Which of the following is not necessarily a divisor of n ?

a) 6      b) 14        c) 28        d) 42

SOLUTION :

Let us take the three consecutive numbers be 5, 6 and 7

=> Their product will be n = 5 * 6 * 7 = 210

This number 210 will be divisible by 6 and gives 35 as the quotient , and divisible by 14 and gives 15 as the quotient and by 42 gives 5 as the quotient with no remainders in all the cases.

But 28 doesn’t divide 210 exactly leaving some remainder.

2.  66 games were played in a tournament where each player played against each of the rest. The number of players is ?

a)33          b)12         c)13          d)11

Since each player played against each of the rest , it is possible only with 33 players i.e) 33 players against 33 players.

3. A and B can do a work in 20 and 15 days respectively. They worked together for 6 days after which B was replaced by C. If the work was finished in the next 4 days , the number of days in which C alone could do work will be ?

a) 60 days b) 40 days     c) 35 days             d) 30 days

SOLUTION :

A’s one day’s  work = 1 / 20

B’s one day’s work  = 1 / 15

(A + B) ‘s one day work =  1 / 20 + 1 / 15

=  3 / 60 + 4 / 60

=  7 / 60

=> (A+B)’s 6 days work   =   6 *  7 / 60

= 7  / 10

=> (A+C)’s 4 days work   = 3 / 10

Then (A + C)’s one day work = 3 / 40

=>  C’s one day work =   3 / 40  – 1 / 20

=  3 / 40 – 2 / 40   = 1 / 40

Thus C will complete the work in 40 days.

4. How many meshes are there in 1 square meter of wire gauge if each mesh is 8mm long and 5 mm wide ?

a)2500          b)25000       c)250        d)250000

SOLUTION :

One square meter =  100 cm x 100 cm =  10000 square cm

One square cm =  10 mm x 10 mm  = 100 sq. mm

=>   10000 sq.cm =   100 x 10000        =   1000000 sq. mm

Area of each mesh =   8 x 5 = 40 sq. mm

Number of meshes =  1000000  / 40         =  25,000

5. There is a 4 inch cube painted on all the sides. This is cut into number of 1 inch cubes. What is the number of cubes , which have no painted sides.

a) 6 b) 12            c) 8             d) 10

SOLUTION :

Number of cubes in a  4 inch  cube = 4 x 4 x 4 = 64 cubes

Obviously, first row and the last row can be removed = 16 + 16   = 32 cubes removed.  In the middle on each  alternate faces 8 cubes are removed = 8 + 8 cubes = 16 cubes . Again center cubes in each faces are removed =  4 + 4 = 8 cubes.

So the number of cubes  removed = 32 + 16 + 8 = 56 cubes

Remaining number of cubes = 64 – 56  = 8 cubes.
